Common Tree Problems
Spruces
Pine Tip Weevils - Notice the spruce trees here. Tops dying from pine tip weevils Killing the top 2-4 feet of the tree.
Pine Galls - These look like pine cones growing in the wrong place. Mostly a cosmetic problem, these insects seldom threaten the life of the tree.
Scale Insects - Most serious is a small white scale insect. Mostly un-noticed since it small and lives under a waxy cover. In time it can kill the tree. The highest incidence of this pest in the Park Meadows and Prospector area.
Lack of new growth - New needles on Evergreens have a life of 3 to 6 years. It is essential that new needles be formed every year to keep the tree health and beautiful.
Aspens
A Fungus grows under the bark and spreading throughout the tree.
Scale insects - A gray sooty layer on the bark is a mass of scale insects sucking the life out of the tree.
Beetles boring into the trunk, weakening the wood and providing an entrance for more serious problems.
Aphids making sticky ‘honey dew’ that drips on your car or favorite patio chair.
Some of these problems can be life threatening to the trees. Others are just a nuisance.
